For most women, the right Karwa Chauth dress is a hand-embroidered chanderi suit or anarkali in red, maroon or magenta. It holds its shape through a fast of nearly 14 hours, lets you sit on the floor for the katha without re-pinning anything, and still looks finished when you climb to the terrace for the moon. A Karwa Chauth saree is the better pick if this is your first year as a bride and your family expects one, as long as you're comfortable in a drape for five or six hours straight.
In 2026, when you order matters more than which style you pick. Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday, 29 October. Every one of the 50 pieces in Ikshita Choudhary's Karva Chauth collection is made to order, ships 7 to 30 working days after you order, and can't be returned. Going by the dispatch times on each product page, 27 of those 50 pieces need to be ordered by about 21 September to arrive with a comfortable margin. The full order-by table is further down.
What your outfit goes through on 29 October
Timings below are for New Delhi, as listed by Drik Panchang. Moonrise shifts by city, so check yours.
| Time (New Delhi) | What's happening | What it asks of your outfit |
|---|---|---|
| Before 6:31 AM | Sargi, then the fast begins | Nothing yet. Most women eat sargi in something simple and dress up later |
| Late morning to afternoon | Mehendi dries, bangles go on, relatives drop in | Sleeves that stay off wet mehendi, fabric that doesn't crush while you wait |
| 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM | Puja muhurat: the katha, passing thalis around the circle | Sitting on the floor, head covered with the dupatta, a lit diya close by |
| 8:17 PM | Moonrise, the moon seen through a channi, fast broken | Standing outdoors in cooler air, often on terrace stairs in low light |
The fast in Delhi runs 13 hours 46 minutes. Your festive outfit is usually on for the last five or six of them, which are also the hours when you're hungriest, sitting longest and closest to an open flame. Everything below comes back to that window.
Karwa Chauth saree or suit: which fits your day?
- Choose a saree if it's your first Karwa Chauth, your in-laws expect one, and you can drape it yourself or have someone nearby to re-pin it before the puja.
- Choose an anarkali if you want the most festive look with the least upkeep. The flare starts above the waist, so nothing presses on an empty stomach.
- Choose a straight suit with pants if you'll be on your feet: hosting, cooking the evening meal, driving across town to your mother's.
- Choose a sharara or gharara if the katha in your family runs long and everyone sits cross-legged.
Many families expect a saree or a heavily worked anarkali for a bride's first year. That's custom rather than rule, and it changes from region to region and house to house, so ask before you spend.
The two Karwa Chauth sarees in this edit
Of the 50 pieces, two are sarees. That ratio is honest about how the day works: a suit simply asks less of you across six fasting hours. If a Karwa Chauth saree is non-negotiable, these are your two options.
| Magenta Organza Saree with Chanderi Blouse | Pink Hand Embroidered Organza Saree Set | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | ₹45,000 | ₹25,000 |
| Work | Sequins, cutdana and moti on the organza, golden detailing on the chanderi blouse | Minimal sequin and embroidery on the organza, Bandhani-print chanderi blouse |
| In the set | Saree, stitched chanderi blouse, satin petticoat | 6-yard saree, stitched chanderi blouse, satin petticoat |
| Blouse sizes | XS to 6XL | XS to 6XL |
| Ships after | 15 to 20 working days | 15 to 20 working days |
| Best for | A bride's first Karwa Chauth and evening photographs | A lighter look for your second year or your tenth |
The quiet advantage of both is that the blouse arrives stitched to your size with the petticoat included. You skip the tailor entirely, at the time of year when tailors are hardest to book.
Organza is crisp, so your pleats keep a sharp line all evening without the constant tucking a chiffon needs. That same stiffness makes the pallu lift away from your shoulder the moment you sit down. Pin the pallu at the shoulder and again at the waist before the puja starts, not halfway through the katha.
Suit, sharara or lehenga: how each shape handles the day
Shopping for a Karwa Chauth suit gives you far more choice. Anarkalis and suit sets make up 42 of the 50 pieces (22 anarkalis, 20 straight or flared suit and kurta sets), with three shararas or ghararas and two lehengas alongside.
| Shape | Why it works on a fasting day | What to watch | A pick from this edit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anarkali | Flares from above the waist, so there's no pressure on an empty stomach, and the skirt spreads naturally when you sit | Listed lengths run 54 to 60 inches, which can pool on a shorter frame | Dark Berry Pink Hand Embroidered Chanderi Anarkali Set, ₹35,000, with a chanderi jacket and dabka work |
| Straight or flared suit with pants | The easiest shape to move, cook and host in | Leans on the dupatta for drama, so it reads less bridal | Red Embroidered Chanderi Silk Suit Set, ₹17,000 on sale (was ₹20,000) |
| Sharara or gharara | A short kurti and wide legs let you sit cross-legged through a long katha with no pull at the waist | Wide hems on a dark staircase | Red Hand Embroidered Chanderi Sharara Set, ₹45,000, 32-inch kurti and 43-inch sharara |
| Lehenga | The most bridal silhouette after a saree | A fitted waistband is the least forgiving thing to wear 12 hours into a fast | Magenta Hand Embroidered Muslin Lehenga Set, ₹45,000 |
If you can only buy one Karwa Chauth suit and want it to cover every version of the day, make it an anarkali. It's the only shape that photographs as formally as a saree and asks nothing of you once it's on.
What makes it a Karwa Chauth special suit
Plenty of festive suits would pass at a Diwali party. A Karwa Chauth special suit has three extra jobs: its colour and handwork have to read as suhaag, its dupatta has to work as a head covering, and it has to stay comfortable against your skin for hours without food or water.
Handwork that shows up in diya light
The puja happens by lamp light and the moon sighting in near darkness. Embroidery that catches a small flame matters more than fine detail you'd only notice at noon.
| Technique | What it is | What it does for you on the day |
|---|---|---|
| Zari | Metallic thread embroidery | The gold outlines that pick up diya light, the classic festive finish |
| Cutdana | Small faceted glass beads | The strongest sparkle for its size, but it snags on glass bangles when it sits at the cuff |
| Moti | Pearl beads | A softer glow than sequins, with a little extra weight on the fabric |
| Gota patti | Appliqué made from woven metallic ribbon, a Rajasthani craft | Big shine for very little weight, used on the ₹12,750 wrinkle-cotton anarkalis |
| Dabka | Tightly coiled metal wire | Raised, three-dimensional texture you can feel, used on the Dark Berry Pink anarkali |
| Mirror work | Small mirrors stitched into the embroidery | Throws light back every time you move, used on the Red Hand Embroidered Chanderi Sharara Set |
| Block print | Hand-carved wooden blocks stamped with dye | The lightest, softest option, with nothing to catch or scratch |
A dupatta that stays on your head
In many households, married women cover their heads during the katha. Where the product pages list dupatta length, it's 2.5 metres, enough to go over the head and still fall across one shoulder.
The catch is the fabric. Most sets here come with organza or tissue dupattas, and crisp organza slides off hair far more readily than soft chanderi or georgette. Two U-pins at the crown fix it in seconds. If you'd rather not pin anything, the Pink Georgette Anarkali Set (₹55,000) and the georgette version of the Red Hand Embroidered Anarkali Set (₹45,000) both come with georgette dupattas.
A lining you'll forget about
Three product pages in this edit name the lining. The Red Chanderi Anarakli Set (₹65,000) and the Magenta Chanderi Anarakli Set (₹35,000) are lined in mulmul, a fine, soft cotton that breathes against the skin. The Pink Georgette Anarkali Set uses santoon, a smooth lining with a satin finish. For six hours of wear on an empty stomach, cotton next to the skin is the kinder choice. If a page doesn't mention lining, ask before you order.
Fabric: how it feels at hour ten
Late October in North India swings from a warm afternoon to a noticeably cooler evening. The best fabric is light enough for 3 PM and has enough body to hold embroidery at 8 PM, and chanderi does both. It's a silk-cotton weave from the town of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, with a silk warp and cotton weft, and it has carried a Geographical Indication tag since 2005, according to India Handmade. The cotton is why it breathes. The silk is why it shines.
| Fabric | Where you'll find it here | How it wears over a long day |
|---|---|---|
| Chanderi and light chanderi | Most suit sets and anarkalis | Sheer, light and breathable, holds embroidery without sagging |
| Chanderi silk | Red and Magenta Embroidered Chanderi Silk Suit Sets, Magenta Chanderi Silk Anarkali Suit | A little more sheen and body than plain chanderi |
| Organza, tissue organza, shimmer organza | Both sarees, most dupattas, the Magenta Hand Embroidered Shimmer Organza Suit Set, the Rust Red Shimmer Organza Anarkali Set | Crisp and sheer, stands away from the body so it never clings, gives no warmth after dark |
| Georgette | Pink Georgette Anarkali Set, Maroon Georgette Kurta and Garara Set | Fluid, and resists creasing through hours of sitting |
| Cheese cotton | Maroon Hand Embroidered Cheese Cotton Anarkali Suit Set | Soft and airy, the best choice if your day includes a temple visit or an outdoor gathering |
| Wrinkle cotton | Red and Magenta Hand Embroidered Anarkali Suit Sets | Pre-crinkled, so hours of sitting leave no visible creases, and there's nothing to iron |
| Matka silk | Maroon Hand Embroidered Matka Silk Anarkali Set | A textured, hand-spun silk with real weight, the warmest pick for a breezy terrace |
| Net | Red Hand Embroidered Net Gown With Dupatta | The most formal piece in the edit, closer to reception wear than puja wear |
What to leave in the cupboard: velvet and thick brocade. Ikshita Choudhary's own guidance is to save them for Diwali, because they hold heat indoors, and the label says heavy fabric bought for a "festive" feel is the complaint it hears most after Karwa Chauth.
Colour: red, maroon or the shades beside them
Red and maroon are the suhaag colours, part of the same solah shringar tradition as sindoor and a red bindi. This edit stays within red, crimson, maroon, magenta, pink and rust, and leaves out white and black, the two shades most families avoid on the day.
Wore red at your wedding and don't want a rerun? Magenta and rust carry the same meaning without looking like a repeat. Ikshita Choudhary's styling note puts rust and maroon on warmer skin tones, and magenta and true red on cooler or fairer ones.
One practical tiebreaker is mehendi. Fresh paste smudges onto fabric before it dries, and the orange mark it leaves is obvious on pink and barely visible on red or maroon. If your mehendi goes on the morning of the fast, the darker shade is the safer buy.
What your budget buys
Prices across the collection run from ₹12,250 to ₹85,000.

Sale pieces are 15 to 30 percent off, and Ikshita Choudhary states that sale outfits can't be returned, refunded or exchanged. In practice nothing in this edit is returnable, on sale or not, because every piece is made to order.
The date to order by

If your date has already passed, each product page has a "Need early delivery?" option, and the Ikshita Choudhary team answers on WhatsApp at +91 7840021994. Ordering from abroad, allow at least an extra week for international courier. Shipping is free within India and on international orders above $340.
Getting the size right when there are no returns
Sizes run from XS to 6XL, and every product page offers a Custom Size option. With no returns, a few minutes with a measuring tape is worth more than any styling tip.
- Measure an outfit you already own that fits well, then compare it with the size chart. Sizing varies between labels, so your usual letter size is only a starting point.
- Between sizes? Use Custom Size. That's the whole point of a made-to-order piece.
- Check the length against your own body. The Mulberry Pink Embroidered Chanderi Anarkali Set is 60 inches long, the Dark Berry Pink 54. Measure from your shoulder to the floor in the footwear you'll wear for the puja. If that number is shorter than the listed length, the hem will pool, and you'll feel it on the stairs at 8 PM.
- Leave a little ease at the waist. A waistband that fits perfectly at breakfast feels very different 12 hours into a fast.
- Check for padding. The Mulberry Pink anarkali comes padded and the Dark Berry Pink doesn't, which changes what you wear underneath.
Five things that go wrong on the night
- The dupatta meets the diya. A light organza dupatta with fringe lace drifts at the slightest draught, and the puja thali carries a lit flame. Pin it at the shoulder before you sit down.
- Bangles catch the embroidery. Cutdana and sequins at the cuff snag on glass bangles and chooda. If you're wearing a full set, choose three-quarter sleeves or embroidery that stops short of the wrist.
- Wet mehendi meets full sleeves. Push-up or three-quarter sleeves let the paste dry untouched, which also means a darker stain.
- The hem meets the stairs. A floor-length anarkali or wide sharara needs a free hand to lift it on a dark staircase, so carry a small potli rather than a full handbag.
- The terrace is colder than the living room. Organza gives no warmth at all. If your roof catches the evening breeze, leave a light shawl in a matching tone by the door for the moon sighting.
Quick answers
Can I wear a suit instead of a saree for my first Karwa Chauth?
In plenty of families, yes. Some expect a saree in a bride's first year and some don't, so check with your in-laws before you order.
Will the outfit work for Diwali too?
Diwali falls ten days later. A red or maroon anarkali in chanderi silk or organza moves between both festivals without looking out of place.
Can I change the colour or buy only the kurta?
The product pages offer both: the same style in a bespoke colour, or a single piece from the set. Ask about dispatch time first, since customisation can change it.
I live in the US or Canada. Which date do I plan around?
For New York, Drik Panchang lists Karwa Chauth on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, with moonrise at 7:35 PM. Check the panchang for your own city, then count your order date back from that day plus international shipping time.
